Ganga: Illegal floodplain encroachment

Ganga Illegal floodplain encroachment (2)

The National Green Tribunal (NGT) has recently noted that the floodplain of the Ganga in Kanpur district, Uttar Pradesh, is being illegally encroached upon. This is a clear violation of its 2017 order.

NGT’s 2017 Judgment:

  • In 2017, the NGT designated a 100-metre area from the edge of the Ganga between Haridwar and Unnao as a “No Development Zone” and “No Construction or Regulatory Zone.” This action was taken to prevent encroachment and reduce pollution in the river.

About Floodplain Zoning:

  • Floodplain zoning serves as an effective non-structural strategy for managing floods.
  • It involves demarcating zones likely to be affected by floods of varying magnitudes and frequencies.
  • This zoning also dictates the types of permissible developments within these zones to minimize damage caused by floods.
