The Global Alliance of National Human Rights Institutions (GANHRI) has recently deferred the accreditation of the National Human Rights Commission-India (NHRC) for the second consecutive year, which may affect India’s voting rights at the Human Rights Council and some UNGA bodies.
About the GANHRI:
- GANHRI, established in 1993, is a unique global network of National Human Rights Institutions (NHRIs) that not only coordinates between NHRIs and the UN human rights system but also operates the only non-UN internal accreditation system.
- This system, based on compliance with the 1993 Paris Principles, allows access to UN committees.
- With 120 members, including India, GANHRI’s secretariat is housed within UN Human Rights.
- Before 2016, it was known as the International Coordinating Committee of National Human Rights Institutions.
- The accreditation for NHRIs by GANHRI is based on the Paris Principles, with ‘A status’ indicating full compliance and ‘B status’ signifying partial compliance.
