Green Hydrogen Pilot Projects in the steel sector have been launched by the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) under the National Green Hydrogen Mission (NGHM).
About the Guidelines:
- It aims to foster sustainable energy practices within the steel industry and target the implementation of pilot projects utilizing Green Hydrogen to reduce carbon emissions in steel production.
- It focuses on:
- Direct Reduced Ironmaking process
- Blast Furnaces
- Substituting fossil fuels with Green Hydrogen
- Additionally, innovative applications of hydrogen in iron and steel production are supported, alongside greenfield projects for achieving 100% green steel production.
- With a budgetary allocation of Rs 455 crore until FY 2029-30, the scheme aims to reduce fossil fuel use, decrease fuel import dependency by substituting with Green Hydrogen, Green Ammonia, or Green Methanol, and support greenfield projects (new ventures without constraints from prior work).
Other key facts:
- Green Hydrogen is produced via water electrolysis using electricity from renewable sources, offering an eco-friendly alternative by not emitting Greenhouse Gases (GHGs) during its production.
