The Union Minister of Port Shipping and Waterways, officially launched the Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) for the Green Tug Transition Program (GTTP) in New Delhi.
About Green Tug Transition Program (GTTP):
- This initiative marks a significant step in India’s environmental sustainability efforts, aiming to transition from conventional fuel-based harbor tugs to greener, more sustainable alternatives.
- The GTTP is part of the ‘Panch Karma Sankalp’ initiative and was initially announced in 2023, during the ‘Chintan Shivir’ event.
- The program is set to phase out conventional tugs at Indian Major Ports and replace them with green tugs powered by cleaner fuels.
- Phase 1 involves four Major Ports—Jawaharlal Nehru Port Authority, Deendayal Port Authority, Paradip Port Authority, and V.O. Chidambaranar Port Authority.
- Each of which will procure or charter at least two green tugs, and an investment of around INR 1000 Crores.
- The initial tugs will be battery-electric, with future provisions for hybrid, methanol, and green hydrogen technologies.
- GTTP aligns with India’s vision for a sustainable maritime sector and supports the ‘Make in India’ initiative, promoting domestic innovation and manufacturing.
- The program will also boost the domestic tug industry, with all tugs constructed in Indian shipyards, creating significant employment opportunities in shipbuilding and design.
- By 2040, all tugs at Indian Major Ports are expected to be green tugs, with any new tugs built in India post-2033 required to comply with the ASTDS-GTTP standards.
- The Green Tug Transition Program aligns with the Maritime India Vision 2030, which includes targets for renewable energy use and carbon emission reductions.
- The Maritime Amrit Kaal Vision 2047 further aims for a 30% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions from port vessels by 2030.
