The Gujarat government recently announced 27% reservation for Other Backward Classes (OBCs) in panchayats and urban local bodies.
Changes in OBC reservation by Gujarat:
- It hiked reservations for Other Backward Classes (OBCs) from the existing 10% to 27% in local bodies like panchayats, municipalities, and civic corporations.
- The change in quotas would aid in elections for village panchayats, district panchayats and municipalities.
- The state government appointed Justice Jhaveri committee based on directions from the Supreme court to redefine seat reservation for OBCs.
- It was aimed to collect and analyze data on the nature and implications of backwardness in local bodies.
- But the OBC communities would continue to get 10% reservation in areas under the Panchayats (Extension to Scheduled Areas) Act.
- The PESA-notified areas include predominantly tribal talukas in eight districts of the state.
- PESA provides for extension of the provisions of Part IX of the Constitution related with Panchayats to the Scheduled Areas based on self-government.
- The population of OBCs in Gujarat is about 52%.
