India and Indonesia are commemorating 75 years of diplomatic ties, strengthening the India-Indonesia relationship.
India-Indonesia Relations:
Diplomatic Ties
- Diplomatic ties were established between India and Indonesia in 1950. The Treaty of Friendship was signed a year later, in 1951.
- Both nations played key roles at the 1955 Bandung Conference, which led to the formation of the Non-Aligned Movement in 1961.
- The relationship was elevated to a Strategic Partnership in 2005 and further upgraded to a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership.
- Since 2014, Indonesia has been a significant part of India’s Act East Policy.
Maritime Cooperation in the Indo-Pacific
- Both countries hold strategic geographic positions between the Indian and Pacific Oceans.
- They collaborate on infrastructure projects, such as the Sabang Port development under the SAGAR initiative.
- They actively participate in joint military exercises, including Samudra Shakti, Garuda Shakti, and IND-INDO CORPAT.
Robust Trade Relations
- Indonesia is India’s largest trading partner in the ASEAN region.
- Bilateral trade has grown significantly, from USD 4.3 billion in 2005-06 to USD 38.84 billion in 2022-23.
- India is the second-largest importer of crude palm oil from Indonesia.
Cultural Ties
- The influence of Hinduism and Buddhism has significantly shaped Indonesian culture.
- Indian epics, such as the Ramayana and the Mahabharata, are integral to Indonesian arts.
- The Indian diaspora in Indonesia numbers around 100,000, primarily residing in Jakarta, Medan, Surabaya, and Bandung.
International Collaboration
- India and Indonesia jointly participate in global platforms such as the G20, the Indian Ocean Rim Association (IORA), and the United Nations.
