President Droupadi Murmu recently launched India’s first indigenously-developed CAR T-cell therapy for treatment of cancer.
About NexCAR19 CAR T-cell therapy:
- Developed jointly by IIT Bombay and the Tata Memorial Centre, the NexCAR19 CAR T-cell therapy is India’s first indigenous gene-based cancer treatment, promising to lower treatment costs significantly.
Difference between T-cells and B-cells:
| Aspect | B-cells | T-cells |
| Origin and Maturation | Originate and mature in the bone marrow. | Originate from the bone marrow, mature in the thymus gland. |
| Antigen Recognition | Recognize antigens directly through membrane-bound antibody receptors (immunoglobulins or Ig). | Recognize antigens when presented by antigen-presenting cells (APCs) via T-cell receptors (TCRs). |
| Function | Humoral immunity; production of antibodies; marking pathogens for destruction. | Cell-mediated immunity; direct killing of infected or abnormal cells; coordination of immune response. |
| Response to Pathogens | Effective against intracellular pathogens, cancer cells, and transplanted tissues | Effective against extracellular pathogens such as bacteria and parasites |
