Kalesar Wildlife Sanctuary, located in Haryana’s Yamunanagar district, recently saw the Supreme Court stay the construction of four proposed dams within its boundaries.
About Kalesar Wildlife Sanctuary:
- Kalesar Wildlife Sanctuary is a protected area, notified in 1996, in Kalesar of Yamunanagar district of Haryana state.
- Kalesar Wildlife Sanctuary, the largest in Haryana, lies in the lower Shivalik region at the foothills of the Himalayas.
- It derives its name from the Kalesar Forest, which is a part of the reserve.
- Kalesar Wildlife Sanctuary borders three states: Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, and Uttar Pradesh.
- The Yamuna River serves as the eastern boundary with Uttar Pradesh, while the main Shiwalik ridge divides the state boundaries among Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, and Uttarakhand in the north.
- It is contiguous to Simbalbara National Park in Himachal Pradesh and Rajaji National Park in Uttarakhand.
- Flora: It is characterized by a broadleaf deciduous forest, consisting of trees such as sal, khair, shisam, tun, sain, and amla.
- Fauna: It is home to many species of animals, including leopards, sambar deer, barking deer, hyenas, jackals, Indian porcupines, Indian pangolins and langurs.
- The sanctuary is also known for its medicinal plants and Dak bungalows, which are administrative architectural bungalows built in colonial times.
