Karnataka has recently banned cancer-causing food colors, including Rhodamine-B, in popular food items like cotton candy and Gobi Manchurian.
Regulation on food colours:
- The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) is the government agency responsible for regulating food colouring in India, allowing only the approved colours (natural or synthetic) within prescribed limits.
- The use of these colours, including carotene, carotenoids, beta-carotene, canthaxanthin, chlorophyll, caramel, riboflavin, saffron, and curcumin, must be mentioned in food menus for informed choices.
- According to the Food Safety and Standards Regulations, 2009, the final concentration of synthetic food colorants must not exceed 100 ppm in fresh foods and 200 ppm in canned food.
