About Ratle Hydroelectric Project:

  • It is situated on the Chenab River.
  • Structure Features:
    • 133-meter tall gravity dam
    • Dual adjacent power stations The Ratle project is designed to boost the local economy through increased power production and is an example of advanced engineering in sustainable infrastructure.

About Indus Water Treaty (IWT):

  • The treaty was signed in Karachi in 1960 by then Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru of India and President Ayub Khan of Pakistan.
  • Water Distribution:
    • India: Beas, Ravi, and Sutlej Rivers (Eastern Rivers)
    • Pakistan: Indus, Chenab, and Jhelum Rivers (Western Rivers)
  • India is entitled to utilize 20% of the total water from the Indus River system.
  • The treaty aims to foster cooperation and peaceful management of water resources across borders.
  • Administrative Mechanisms:
    • Permanent Indus Commission (PIC) for ongoing treaty implementation and management
