About Lathyrism:

  • Lathyrism is a condition caused by consuming legumes from the Lathyrus genus.
  • It manifests in three forms: neurolathyrism, osteolathyrism, and angiolathyrism.
  • Neurolathyrism:
    • It is caused by ODAP toxin found in certain Lathyrus legumes.
    • It leads to motor neuron death, resulting in paralysis and muscle atrophy of lower limbs.
  • Osteolathyrism:
    • It affects connective tissues due to beta-aminopropionitrile toxin.
    • It commonly results from consuming Lathyrus odoratus seeds (sweet peas).
  • Angiolathyrism:
    • It is similar to osteolathyrism but impacts blood vessels.
    • It is also caused by beta-aminopropionitrile.

Prevention Strategies:

  • Consuming grasspeas with legumes high in sulfur-based amino acids reduces lathyrism risk.
  • Some Indian states have banned Lathyrus seed sales to prevent consumption and reduce Lathyrus cases.
