Lake Retba, located in Senegal, is recently facing multiple challenges threatening its existence including the increase in Nitrate level and pollution.
About the Lake Retba:
- Lake Retba is also known as Lac Rose or the Pink Lake due to its pink waters, caused by the presence of halophilic green algae “Dunaliella salina”.
- Freshwater comes from seasonal water tables in the surrounding dunes, isolated from the sea by the sand.
- The Dunaliella salina alga can resist salt due to high carotenoid pigments and glycerol content.
- The salinity levels influence the dominance of red or green pigmented algae.

- The Senegal, officially the Republic of Senegal, is a country located in West Africa.
- It shares borders with Mauritania to the North and Northwest; by Mali to the East; by Guinea in the South; by Guinea-Bissau to the Southwest and by the Atlantic Ocean to the West.
- It nearly surrounds the country of Gambia.
- The capital city of Senegal is Dakar.
- The Senegal’s location makes it a strategically important country, serving as a gateway between North and West Africa.
- For this reason, the Senegal is known as the “Gateway to Africa.”
- The Sahel region is present in the north of the Senegal.
