- Often referred to as “people’s courts”, the first Lok Adalat was held in Gujarat in 1982 and has been given statutory status under the Legal Services Authorities Act, 1987.
- Composition:
- A Lok Adalat typically includes a judicial officer and members such as lawyers and social workers.
- Powers:
- Lok Adalats possess judicial powers akin to those of a civil court under the Code of Civil Procedure (CPC), 1908.
- They are used to resolve a variety of cases including family and matrimonial disputes, property disputes, issues involving public utilities, financial matters, motor accident claims, land acquisition, etc.
- Decisions rendered by the Lok Adalat are final and binding on all parties, with no right of appeal against such decisions.
