About Lok Adalat:

  • Lok Adalat, an Alternative Dispute Redressal Mechanism (ADRM), is designed to resolve disputes amicably, whether they are already in court or not yet legally filed.
  • Often referred to as “people’s courts”, the first Lok Adalat was held in Gujarat in 1982 and has been given statutory status under the Legal Services Authorities Act, 1987.
  • Composition:
  • A Lok Adalat typically includes a judicial officer and members such as lawyers and social workers.
  • Powers:
  • Lok Adalats possess judicial powers akin to those of a civil court under the Code of Civil Procedure (CPC), 1908.
  • They are used to resolve a variety of cases including family and matrimonial disputes, property disputes, issues involving public utilities, financial matters, motor accident claims, land acquisition, etc.
  • Decisions rendered by the Lok Adalat are final and binding on all parties, with no right of appeal against such decisions.
