ICAR-CMFRI researchers recently observed that coral bleaching occurred in the Lakshadweep due to marine heatwaves since October 2023.

About the Marine Heatwaves:

  • Period of at least 5 consecutive days with abnormally high ocean temperatures (90th percentile or higher) compared to the average seasonal temperature.
  • Caused by various factors including weather phenomena, intrapersonal events, El Niño events, climate change, changes in ocean currents, and excessive heat transfer.
  • Duration ranges from weeks to years.
