Nigeria has become the first country to introduce the vaccine “Men5CV,” which targets 5 strains of meningococcus bacteria, a major cause of Meningitis and is recommended by the World Health Organization (WHO).
About the Meningitis:
- Meningitis is characterized by the inflammation of tissues around the brain and spinal cord, typically caused by infections but can occasionally result from injuries, cancers, and drugs.
- The disease is most commonly and fatally caused by bacteria, although viruses, fungi, and parasites can also be culprits. Young children are particularly vulnerable and the condition can be fatal within 24 hours.
- Transmission generally occurs person-to-person through respiratory droplets or throat secretions, and from mother to child during birth.
- Symptoms of Meningitis include neck stiffness, fever, confusion, headaches, nausea, seizures, coma, and neurological deficits.
- Treatment options include vaccines that prevent some bacterial infections and medications such as antibiotics like Ciprofloxacin and ceftriaxone.
