The Supreme Court (SC) has recently reiterated its 2023 ruling to halt all mining activities within a 1-Km radius of the Sariska Tiger Reserve in Rajasthan, ensuring compliance with its own directives.
SC’s observations:
- The SC’s order from 2023 prohibits mining within national parks, wildlife sanctuaries, and a 1-Km buffer zone around their boundaries, revising its 2022 directive that required states to establish a 1 Km Eco Sensitive Zone (ESZ) around protected forests.
- An ESZ is defined as the areas around Protected Areas (PAs), designated by the Ministry of Environment, Forests and Climate Change (MoEFCC) under the Environment Protection Act (EPA), 1986, aimed at minimizing the negative impacts of development on PAs’ ecosystems.
