The UN General Assembly has expressed concern over the proliferation of disinformation.
About Misinformation:
- The United Nations Human Rights Council defines misinformation as false or manipulated information that is spread without the intent to deceive, but which can nonetheless have a serious impact on the enjoyment and realization of human rights.
- Along with disinformation, it has been identified as one of the top five risks impacting worldwide peace and prosperity (Global Risk Report 2024).
- Common forms of misinformation include rumors, misunderstandings, or errors in data that are disseminated, often unknowingly.
- Misinformation spreads through various channels like social media, word of mouth, or traditional media. Those sharing it typically do not intend to cause harm.
About Disinformation:
- Disinformation, on the other hand, is false information that is deliberately created and disseminated with the intent to deceive and manipulate public opinion or obscure the truth.
- It is often used in political propaganda, to influence elections, discredit opposition, or cause social unrest.
- Tactics can include the use of fake news, manipulated photos or videos, and creating or amplifying divisive or misleading narratives
