A deadly strain of the mpox (monkeypox) variant, previously confined to the Democratic Republic of Congo, has been rapidly spreading across Kenya and other African countries.

What is Mpox (monkeypox)?

  • Formerly known as monkeypox, Mpox is a zoonotic viral disease caused by the Monkeypox virus (MPXV).
    • Monkeypox virus (MPXV) is a member of the Orthopoxvirus genus within the same family as the smallpox-causing virus.
  • The disease is endemic in various parts of Central and West Africa.

How does the mpox virus spread?

  • Mpox is transmitted through direct contact with the bodily fluids of an infected person or animal, or close physical interactions such as kissing, cuddling, or sexual contact.
  • It can also be transmitted by contact with materials contaminated with the virus.
  • As per the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the virus can enter through broken skin, the respiratory tract, or the mucous membranes of the eyes, nose, or mouth.

What are the symptoms of mpox?

  • Initial symptoms of mpox include fever, chills, headache, muscle aches, and swollen lymph nodes.
  • Within days, a rash typically begins on the face before spreading to other parts of the body.
  • This rash can resemble that of chickenpox or syphilis and eventually forms scabs that later fall off.
  • The incubation period ranges from 5 to 21 days, typically starting around 6 to 13 days after exposure.

What is the treatment for mpox?

  • Currently, there is no specific treatment approved for mpox.

How to prevent mpox?

  • Avoid contact with infected individuals and animals,
  • Wash hands regularly with soap and water or use an alcohol-based sanitizer,
  • Practice respiratory hygiene by sneezing or coughing into the crook of the arm, and
  • Avoid unprotected sexual contact with individuals suspected of having the virus.
