India’s fastest and indigenously designed IP/MPLS (Multiprotocol Label Switching) router was launched recently in Bengaluru.
About Multiprotocol Label Switching (MPLS):
- MPLS is a routing technique in telecommunications networks that directs data from one node to the next, based on labels rather than network addresses.
- It is a technique for speeding up network connections that was first developed in the 1990s.
- Its main function is to speed up network connections by sending packets along predetermined network paths.
- To reduce the time of data transfer, MPLS identifies paths-network “roads”, instead of identifying a series of intermediary destinations.
- It is used in wide area networks (WANs) to speed up and shape traffic flows.
- It can be used when speed and reliability are highly important.
Features of India’s Multiprotocol Label Switching (MPLS):
- The indigenously developed router has a speedof2.4 terabytes per second (TBps), denoting the rate of data transmission.
- One terabyte is equivalent to 1,000 gigabytes or one lakh crore bytes.
- It operates on India’s indigenous network operating system, Nivetti NiOS.
- The installation of the router will be helpful in the growth of several sectors be it the Railways communication network, power grid, telecommunications and television media.
- MPLS is a routing technique, which is used in telecommunications networks that directs data from one node to the next.
- The data transfer is held based on labels rather than network addresses.
- The router which has been built with a collaboration of the Department of Telecom, CDOT and Nivetti, is capable of handling 2.4 tbps data.
Nivetti’s Network Operating System (NiOS):
- NiOS is India’s first indigenous Network Operating System.
- A secure, hyper-scale, and programmable platform provide the foundation blocks of security, scalability, and programmability.
- Nivetti Systems is a Bengaluru-based company that aims to deliver a wide portfolio of products infused with its NiOS.
