About Mumbai Trans Harbour Link (MTHL) project:

  • MTHL is an elevated road bridge that will connect Mumbai to its satellite city, Navi Mumbai.
  • The bridge is also known as the Sewri–Nhava Sheva Trans Harbour Link and officially named the Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee Trans Harbour Link.
  • This is an access-controlled bridge from Sewri (Mumbai) to Chirle (Navi Mumbai) with three interchanges, that would reduce the trip time from two hours to roughly 15-20 minutes.
  • It is also the world’s 10th longest sea bridge.
  • Interchanges of MTHL:
    • Sewri in South Mumbai, connecting the MTHL to the Eastern Freeway (Mumbai side).
    • Shivaji Nagar in Ulwe connecting the MTHL to the Navi Mumbai Coastal Road project.
    • Chirle interchange, where one arm will connect State Highway-54, and the second will connect NH-4 Mumbai-Pune Highway.

Key Technologies used for MTHL:

  • Open Road Tolling System: Also called all-electronic tolling, cashless tolling, the collection of tolls without the use of toll booths, to drive through the toll plaza at highway speeds without slowing down.
    • The MTHL is the first project in the country with an open road tolling system.
  • Orthotropic steel deck technology: It is a method of welding steel plates together to create a flat, solid steel deck, which is stiffened by a grid of deck ribs and welded to floor beams and girders.
    • About 85,000 Metric Ton of orthotropic steel has been used which is similar to the weight of a Boeing 747 aircraft.
  • Steel bars: Nearly 1,70,000 Metric Ton of steel bars equivalent to the weight of 17 Eiffel Towers was used.
  • Prestressing wires: About 48,000-km-long prestressing wires have been used which is four times the diameter of earth.
  • Use of concrete: 9,75,000 cubic meters of concrete used which is six times the concrete used for the Statue of Liberty.
  • Pile Liners: Liner or casing is one type of steel formwork that gives the desired shape to green concrete and is circular in shape. Orthotropic steel bridge deck. | Download Scientific Diagram
