The National Green Tribunal (NGT) has directed Chennai Petroleum Corporation Limited (CPCL) to pay ₹5 crore as a ‘no-fault liability’ for an oil spill off the Nagapattinam coast, Tamil Nadu.
About oil spill:
- An oil spill is the release of liquid petroleum hydrocarbon into the environment, especially in marine areas, due to human activity.
- It may be caused by accidental release from crude oil from tankers, offshore platforms, drilling rigs, or wells.
- No-fault liability, also known as strict liability, is invoked when the accident is caused by an external force and not by any negligence or error from the agency itself.
