Nagpur, the geographical heart of India, recently launched the country’s first city-specific Zero Carbon Buildings Action Plan (ZCBAP) as a step towards sustainable development.
About the ZCBAP:
- The ZCBAP aims to mitigate GHG (Greenhouse Gas) emissions through strategic choices in building materials, design, construction, management, and deconstruction.
- Its comprehensive strategy targets achieving net-zero carbon emissions from all buildings in Nagpur by 2050, covering public structures, government-affordable housing, commercial buildings, and residential homes.
- The plan was developed jointly by the Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) and Nagpur Smart and Sustainable City Development Corporation Ltd (NSSCDCL), and led with partners like the UNEP (UN Environment Programme), GEF (Global Environment Facility), and WRI (World Resources Institute).
- The plan underscores the reduction of emissions from construction materials, operations, and demolition.
- It also recommends adopting fly ash bricks as a green construction material instead of red bricks to foster sustainability.
