The National Commission for Backward Classes (NCBC) has recently recommended an increase in the reservation quota for Other Backward Classes (OBCs) in public employment in Punjab and West Bengal.
About NCBC:
- Established in 1993 under the NCBC Act, 1993, and later accorded constitutional status by the 102nd Amendment Act, 2018, the NCBC advises the government on the socio-economic development of the OBCs, including their inclusion/exclusion in the OBCs list and evaluating their development.
- The commission, as per Article 340 of the Indian Constitution, consists of a Chairperson, Vice-Chairperson, and three other Members.
- It investigates matters related to safeguards for backward classes, submits annual reports to the President, and provides recommendations, which the government must consider, providing reasons for any disagreement.
