Details on the New initiatives under Pradhan Mantri Fasal Bima Yojana (PMFBY):

Sarathi (Sandbox for Agricultural and Rural Security, Technology and Insurance) Portal:

  • It aims to provide comprehensive insurance products including PMFBY, tailored explicitly for farmers and rural population of India.
  • It will offer digitized insurance that simplifies the process for farmers and offers user-friendly interfaces for stakeholders.
  • The portal will be a single-window platform for viewing, purchasing, and availing insurance products.
  • The platform will have digital payment options and streamlined premium collection, effortless claim initiation, tracking and resolution.
  • It shall be covered in a phased manner with personal accident and hospital cash policies in first phase.
  • The second phase covers health, shop and home insurance, while tractor, two-wheeler, livestock and non-PMFBY insurance products are in the third phase.

Krishi Rakshak Portal and Helpline:

  • It was launched to strengthen grievance redressal mechanism of the PMFBY through helpline number 14447.
  • The portal will operate as a facilitator, bridging gap between insured farmer and insurance companies, bankers, Common Service Centres (CSCs) and governments.
  • Farmers can register their complaints either on portal or helpline, and forward to insurance companies for redressal.
  • The Centre will be a mediator to ensure the farmers’ grievances are resolved.

Learning Material System:

  • A learning material system about PMFBY, Modified Interest Subvention Scheme (MIIS) and Kisan Credit Card (KCC) was launched for stakeholders implementing these schemes.
  • It was launched by Ministry of Agriculture in collaboration with the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeiTy).
  • This system seeks to facilitate continuous learning, knowledge enhancement, and coordination among new and existing users of KCC and PMFBY portals.

About Pradhan Mantri Fasal Bima Yojana (PMFBY):

  • It is an agricultural insurance scheme that aims to support agricultural production by providing affordable crop insurance.
  • PMFBY offers financial support to farmers in case of crop loss due to natural calamities, pests, or diseases.
  • It covers pre-sowing losses, post-harvest losses, and losses due to unseasonal rainfall.
  • The maximum premium payable by the farmers is2% for all Kharif Food and oilseeds crops, 1.5% for Rabi Food & Oilseeds crops, and5% for Annual Commercial/Horticultural Crops.
  • Farmers have to pay only 50% of the insurance premium, the rest is given as subsidy by the central and state governments.
