New Post Office Act 2023 comes into effect

The Post Office Act, 2023, which repeals the Indian Post Office Act of 1898, has officially come into effect.

Key Highlights of the Act:

• Head of India Post: The Director General of Postal Services will lead India Post and has the authority to regulate matters such as tariffs for services and the supply/sale of postage stamps.
• Powers to Intercept Postal Articles: The government may intercept postal articles for reasons including the security of the state, public order, maintaining friendly relations with foreign states, and during emergencies.
• Exemptions from Liability: The government is exempt from any liability related to the loss, misdelivery, delay, or damage of a postal article.
• Penalties: The Jan Vishwas (Amendment of Provisions) Act, 2023 has removed certain penalties and offences related to postal services.
