NOTTO ID is now mandatory for all organ transplants to regulate and monitor the process, particularly to prevent commercial dealings in organs.

About NOTTO ID:

  • Must be generated by the hospital using the NOTTO website.
  • For deceased donor transplants, allocation of organs requires a NOTTO-ID.
  • In living donor transplants, it must be generated within 48 hours post-surgery.
  • Aims to curb illegal organ trading, especially involving foreign nationals.

About National Organ and Tissue Transplant Organization (NOTTO):

  • Established under the Directorate General of Health Services, Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Government of India.
  • Located in New Delhi.
  • Serves as the apex center for coordination and networking of organ and tissue procurement, distribution, and registry across India.
  • Incorporates two major divisions:
    • National Human Organ and Tissue Removal and Storage Network: Manages the coordination, procurement, and distribution of organs and tissues. Also handles the registry for organ and tissue donations and transplants in India.
    • National Biomaterial Centre (National Tissue Bank): Focuses on tissue donation and the registration of tissue banks. It addresses the gap between demand and supply and ensures quality assurance in tissue availability.
  • Activities include:
    • Coordination for tissue procurement and distribution
    • Donor tissue screening, removal, storage, and preservation
    • Laboratory screening of tissues, tissue tracking, and sterilization
    • Maintenance of records, data protection, and confidentiality
    • Quality management in tissues, patient information, development of guidelines, protocols, and standard operating procedures
    • Training and assistance in registration of other tissue banks.
  • Stricter monitoring of transplants enforced by local authorities.
  • Part of efforts to regulate and streamline organ and tissue transplantation as per the Transplantation of Human Organs (Amendment) Act 2011.
