The Government of India has accelerated efforts to evacuate the Indians residing in Haiti to the Dominican Republic under Operation Indravati.
About Operation Indravati:
- Haiti, located in the Caribbean Sea, has been plagued by violence orchestrated by various armed gangs.
- Recent incidents include an attack on the country’s largest prison in Port-au-Prince, resulting in the escape of 3,500 inmates, and the resignation of Prime Minister Ariel Henry amid a deteriorating law and order situation.
- In response to the escalating crisis, India launched Operation Indravati to swiftly evacuate its nationals from Haiti to the neighboring Dominican Republic.
- So far, External Affairs Minister has announced the successful evacuation of 12 Indians to the Dominican Republic.
- India does not have an embassy in Haiti, hence coordination for evacuation is managed through the embassy in the Dominican Republic.
