Delhi High Court has recently ordered state authorities to take action against the use of oxytocin in cattle within Delhi’s dairies.
About the Oxytocin:
- Oxytocin is a hormone secreted by the pituitary glands of mammals during sex, childbirth, lactation, or social bonding.
- Commonly referred to as the ‘love hormone,’ oxytocin plays a crucial role in preventing excessive bleeding in new mothers post-delivery and promotes breast milk release.
- Its misuse in milch cattle aims to increase milk production, but it adversely affects the cattle, making them barren and reducing their lifespans.
- In India, oxytocin is regulated under the Drugs and Cosmetics Act of 1940.
- Administering oxytocin to animals without necessity is a cognisable offence under the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act, 1960.
