Scientists at Jawaharlal Nehru Centre For Advanced Scientific Research (JNCASR) have developed a new silk-based hydrogel system that mimics the pancreas.

• It is expected to address the challenges faced by individuals with both Type 1 and advanced-stage Type 2 diabetes.

• It is a gland located in the abdomen, roughly six inches long and pear-shaped.
• Surrounding organs include the stomach, small intestine, liver, spleen, and gallbladder.

• Endocrine Function: The pancreas is vital for regulating blood sugar levels and metabolism through the production of hormones such as insulin and glucagon.
• Exocrine Function: It aids in the digestion process by secreting enzymes into the small intestine that break down carbohydrates, fats, and proteins, facilitating their absorption.

Disorders Related to the Pancreas:

• Pancreatic disorders include conditions like pancreatitis, diabetes mellitus, and pancreatic cancer.
• These ailments affect the pancreas’s ability to perform its endocrine and exocrine functions efficiently.
