More than 200 bird species sighted in Papikonda National Park.
About Papikonda National Park (PNP):
- Papikonda National Park (PNP) is located in the Godavari region of the Eastern Ghats in Andhra Pradesh.
- Situated near Rajamahendravaram in the Papi Hills, it stretches across the Alluri Sitharama Raju and Eluru districts.
- It is an Important Bird and Biodiversity Area and home to some endangered species of flora and fauna.
- The vegetation of Papikonda national park contains species of moist deciduous and dry deciduous forests.
- A unique dwarf breed of goat known locally as the “kanchu mekha” originates in this region.
Fauna:
- The park is home to carnivore species such as the Tiger, Leopard, and Hyena, as well as the vulnerable bovidae, the Indian gaur.
- Additionally, species like sambar, barking deer, chowsinga, and spotted deer constitute the prey base for these top predators.
- The park boasts 92 recorded bird species, including the common peacock, Red jungle fowl, and others.
- It is also home to various reptiles such as the Indian python, king cobra, Indian cobra, monitor lizard, chameleon, freshwater crocodile, Indian Golden gecko, and more.
