The 1st session of the 18th Lok Sabha began with the oath-taking ceremony for newly elected Members of Parliament (MPs).
About the Parliamentary Oath:
- The Parliamentary Oath is mandated by the Third Schedule of the Indian Constitution.
- Legal Requirement: Article 99 requires MPs to take an oath or affirmation before the President or an appointed representative, typically the Speaker (pro tem).
- Penalty for Non-compliance: Article 104 imposes a financial penalty on any MP who participates in or votes in House proceedings without taking the required oath. However, a person can become a minister without being elected to Parliament and participate in proceedings but is not allowed to vote.
- Languages for Oath: Oaths can be administered in English or any of the 22 recognized languages, including Sanskrit.
- Special Provisions: MPs who are incarcerated can still take their oaths in Parliament.
