“The Plastic Overshoot Day 2024” report was recently released by EA Earth Action, revealing that in 2024, the globe will generate 220 million tonnes of plastic waste, marking a 7.11% increase since 2021.
Key findings:
- 12 countries account for 60% of the world’s mismanaged plastic waste, with India ranking among the top five and classified as “Low-Waste-Producing Polluters” despite a very high Mismanaged Waste Index (MWI) of 68.62%.
- In India, the annual per capita plastic waste is relatively low at 8 kg, yet the country exports more plastic waste than it imports.

- Plastic Overshoot Day marks the date when the global generation of plastic waste surpasses the world’s capacity to manage it.
- In 2024, this day will fall on 5th September globally and on 23rd April for India, calculated based on each country’s MWI.
