Lokpal, led by Supreme Court judge Ajay Manikrao Khanwilkar, and Vigilance Commissioner Aeratu S. Rajeev, recently approved by PM-led committee.
About the Lokpal:
- The Lokpal is an anti-corruption authority or body of ombudsman with the power to inquire into allegations of corruption against public functionaries, established under the Lokpal and Lokayukt Act, 2013 for both the Union and States.
- The term Lokpal was coined by Dr. L.M.Singhvi in 1963, requiring its chairperson or member to be not less than 45 years old at the time of assuming office.
- Lokpal’s jurisdiction includes the Prime Minister, Ministers, members of Parliament, and Groups A to D officers and officials of the Central Government, with clear timelines for preliminary inquiry and investigation.
- The Lokpal consists of a Chairperson and up to 8 members, with 50% being judicial members and another 50% representing SCs, STs, OBCs, minorities, and women.
- The Selection Committee includes the Prime Minister, Speaker of Lok Sabha, Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha, CJI or a Supreme Court Judge nominated by him, and an eminent jurist nominated by the President.
- Unlike Lokpal, Lokayukta structures vary across states, with some states having created upalo-kayukta and differing in terms of working conditions, appointment processes, and tenure.
