Infrastructure facilities of Project Seabird Phase IIA will be inaugurated by the Defense Minister.
About Project Seabird:
- The project was initiated in 1986 by the Indian Navy for the establishment of the 3rd major naval base in Karwar, Karnataka.
Phase I:
- It was completed in 2011.
- It was designed to accommodate 10 ships.
- It included comprehensive infrastructure such as a breakwater, pier, ship lift, repair yard, logistics, and storage facilities.
Phase IIA:
- It focuses on eco-friendly infrastructure compliant with the Indian Green Building Council (IGBC) and Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (MoEFCC) guidelines.
- IGBC: It is part of the Confederation of Indian Industry and works to facilitate India to become a global leader in the sustainable built environment by 2025.
- Enhancement to accommodate 32 ships and submarines.
- Introduction of over 6 kilometers of berthing space and an iconic Covered Dry Berth.
- Construction of about 10,000 dwelling units across four townships for various personnel.
- Development of a green field dual-use Naval Air Station with a 2700 m runway.
