Government has recently planned to increase radiation processing of onions to prevent shortages and control price rises.
About Radiation processing:
- Radiation processing is a controlled application of energy of ionizing radiations including gamma rays, accelerated electrons, and X-rays, to have a desired effect on the product.
- It delays ripening, enhances shelf life of food by destroying spoilage microbes, etc.
- However, it cannot be used to destroy microbial toxins and pathogen viruses.
- It produces very little chemical changes in food and does not alter the nutritional value as compared to other methods.
- Other uses include sterilization of medical and packaging products, elimination of pathogens and parasites in foods, and color enhancement of gemstones.
