According to Ministry of Earth Sciences, Samudrayaan set to explore ocean bed by 2025 end.
About Samudrayaan Mission:
- The Samudrayaan, also known as the deep ocean mission, was launched in 2021.
- It aimed to develop a self propelled manned submersible to carry 3 humanbeings to a water depth of 6000meters.
- This was realized through the Matsya6000, designed to accommodate a crew of three members.
- The expedition’s primary focus will be on conducting a comprehensive study of deep-sea resources and the assessment of marine biodiversity.
- The projected timeline is five years for the period 2020-2021 to 2025-2026.
- So far, countries such as the U.S., Russia, China, France and Japan have carried out successful deep-ocean crewed missions.
About Matsya6000:
- Matsya6000 will allow scientific personnel to observe and understand unexplored deep sea areas by direct interventions.
- Further, it will enhance the capability for deep sea man rated vehicle development.
- The submersible will be equipped with a suite of scientific sensors and tools, and have an operational endurance of 12 hours, which is extendable up to 96 hours in the event of an emergency.
- It is developed at Chennai’s National Institute of Ocean Technology.
