The 169th anniversary of the Santhal Rebellion or Hul was celebrated on June 30 as Hul Diwas.
About the Santhal Rebellion:
- Originating in 1855-1856 in Jharkhand’s Rajmahal Hills, the Santhal Rebellion was a significant peasant uprising aimed at resisting British imperialism and the oppressive practices of dikus (outsiders), including local landlords and moneylenders.
- The rebellion was led by Sidho, Kanho, Chand, and Bhairav Murmu, along with their sisters Phulo and Jhano.
- The Santhals were initially promised land in Damin-i-Koh (Santhal Pargana) but suffered from exploitation through land-grabbing and bonded labor.
- The Santhal Pargana Tenancy Act, enacted in 1876 as a result of the rebellion, prohibited the transfer of Adivasi lands to non-Adivasis and secured their inheritance rights.
