About Aryabhata:
- Aryabhata was India’s first satellite, launched on April 19, 1975 from Kapustin Yar, a Soviet rocket launch and development site in Astrakhan Oblast.
- It was named after the 5th century Indian astronomer and mathematician Aryabhata.
- It was built by Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) to conduct experiments in X-ray astronomy, aeronomics, and solar physics.
- It was launched by the Soviet Union using a Kosmos-3M launch vehicle as a part of the Soviet Interkosmos programme, which provided access to space for friendly states.
- The launch stemmed from a 1972 agreement between India and the Soviet Union, facilitated by UR Rao.
- It allowed the USSR to track ships and launch vessels from Indian ports in exchange for support in launching Indian satellites.
