About Scrub Typhus and Typhoid:

  • Also Known As: Bush typhus
  • Causative Agent: Bacteria Orientia tsutsugamushi
  • Transmission: Spread through bites of infected chiggers (larval mites) found in bush, jungle, and paddy areas. Not spread from person to person
  • Chigger Habitat: Thrive in low temperature and high humidity conditions
  • Geographical Prevalence: Rural areas of South East Asia, China, Indian subcontinent, and Northern Australia
  • Common Symptoms: Fever, headache, body aches, rash, and a scab-like area (eschar) at the bite site

Diagnosis and Prevention:

  • Diagnosis: Laboratory tests such as Elisa tests
  • Prevention: No vaccine available
  • Treatment: Antibiotic doxycycline, effective if administered early

  • Major public health threat in South and Southeast Asia
