Section 498A of the Indian Penal Code (IPC)

The Supreme Court (SC) has recently urged Parliament to amend Sections 85 and 86 of the Bharatiya Nyay Sanhita (BNS), which have replaced Section 498A of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).

  • The BNS 2023 will come into force on July 1, 2024.

About Section 498A of the Indian Penal Code (IPC):

  • It addresses the issue of domestic violence and punishes offenders (up to 3 years’ imprisonment and a fine).
  • Applicability: It targets acts of violence conducted by the husband or relatives of the husband against a woman.
