Researchers from Mizoram have recently identified and named a new species of coral snake, Sinomicrurus gorei.
- Earlier, Sinomicrurus gorei was considered the same species as Sinomicrurus macclellandi due to their close resemblance.
About the Sinomicrurus gorei:
- The Sinomicrurus gorei is a type of coral snake which is red to brownish in colour and has black stripes on its body.
- It is locally known as ‘Rulṭhihna,’ attributed to its striking resemblance to a traditional Mizo amber necklace called ‘Ṭhihna.’
- It has been named Sinomicrurus gorei after a medical officer, Dr Gore, of British India.
- Sinomicrurus gorei lays up to 3 eggs, while Sinomicrurus macclellandi can lay 6-14 eggs at a time.
- Sinomicrurus gorei is found in both low-lying and hilly areas, broadening the known habitat range for these snakes.
- Sinomicrurus macclellandi, on the other hand, is primarily found in hilly or elevated areas in Mizoram.
Number of Species Worldwide:
- Worldwide, a total of nine species of Sinomicrurus coral snakes have been identified.
