About the Asia and the Pacific SDG Progress Report 2024:

  • It is an annual publication highlighting progress on the 17 SDGs and their 169 targets in the Asia-Pacific region, examining various dimensions such as sex, urbanization, education, age, and income.

Key highlights of the report:

  • The report indicates that most countries in Asia are likely to miss the 2030 SDG target, projecting that the region will only fulfill its SDG agenda by 2062, despite the overall average progress towards achieving all 17 SDGs increasing from 4.4% in 2017 to 17% in 2023.
  • Positive steps have been noted in goals related to eliminating poverty, sustainable industry, innovation, and infrastructure, while fewer efforts are seen in mitigating hunger, enhancing health and well-being, ensuring clean water and sanitation, expanding clean energy, and building sustainable cities.
  • Specifically, the region has experienced a negative trend in Climate Action (Goal 13) compared to 2015.
  • In contrast, India has shown improvement in 85 of the SDG parameters, with stable progress in 27 and a decline in 36.
  • It outperformed other countries in the Asia Pacific region in 2023, though challenges remain in data availability for some SDG indicators and emerging issues like rising obesity in children, higher annual inflation, and the need for resources to strengthen statistical capabilities.
