The Union Minister of Ports, Shipping & Waterways recently announced the development of Tizu Zunki (National Waterways 101) and Doyang River Lake tourism in Nagaland.
About Tizu and Zunki Rivers:
- The Tizu River, originating from Longkhim in Nagaland, flows northeastward through Zunheboto and Phek districts.
- Tizu river in Nagaland further flows into Chindown river (Third largest Tributary of river Irrawaddy river), also known as Ningthi river in Myanmar, at Htamanthi in Myanmar.
- Chindown River further enters into Irrawaddy River – the largest river of Myanmar.
- The Zunki River, the largest tributary of the Tizu, begins in the northeastern Changdong forest and meets the Tizu below Kiphire.
- National Waterway 101, crucial for Inland Water Transport (IWT), runs from Longmatra to Avangkhu in Nagaland.
- It provides an alternative route for cargo movement from the Northeast to international trade routes via the Irrawaddy River which drains into the Andaman Sea.
About Doyang River:
- It is the longest river in Nagaland, and originates from Japfü Hill in Manipur.
- It is also known as Dzu among the Angami people who live there.
- It flows southwest through Nagaland’s Kohima district and eventually joins the Dhansiri River in Assam, which then drains into the Brahmaputra.
- The River hosts the Doyang Hydroelectric Power Plant with a capacity of 75MW.
