The Union Cabinet has approved the continuation of the Umbrella Scheme on ‘Safety of Women’, aimed at enhancing women’s safety nationwide through various initiatives.
About the Umbrella Scheme on ‘safety of women’:
- It is aimed at enhancing women’s safety nationwide by improving intervention mechanisms and investigation efficiency in crimes against women.
- It will be implemented with a budget of Rs 1179.72 crore from 2021-22 to 2025-26, funded partly by the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) and the Nirbhaya Fund.
- Projects under the scheme include
- The 112 ERSS 2.0 for emergency response
- Upgrading forensic labs
- Strengthening DNA and Cyber Forensic capacities, Cyber Crime Prevention against women and children
- Training for investigators and prosecutors
- Establishing Women Help Desks and Anti-human Trafficking Units in police stations for support and legal assistance to women in distress.
