The United Nations General Assembly voted to grant new rights and privileges to Palestine and called on the Security Council to favourably reconsider its request to become the 194th member of the United Nations.

What is the Process for adding New Member to the United Nations?

Eligibility Criteria

  • The state must be peace-loving and able to fulfil and willing to accept the obligations contained in the UN Charter.

Application Submission

  • An aspiring member state must submit an application to the Secretary-General of the UN.
  • The application should include a declaration that the state accepts the obligations of the UN Charter.

Consideration by UNSC

  • The Security Council (SC) considers the application.
  • For a recommendation to proceed, the application must receive affirmative votes from at least nine of the fifteen members of the SC.
  • The votes must include the concurring votes of all five permanent members (China, France, Russia, the United Kingdom, and the United States), giving each a veto power.

Recommendation to the UNGA

  • If the SC recommends admission, this recommendation is presented to the General Assembly (UNGA) for consideration.

Approval by the UNGA

  • A two-thirds majority vote of the General Assembly members present and voting is required for the admission of a new member.
  • The General Assembly makes the final decision on admission.

Membership

  • Once the General Assembly passes the resolution, the admission of the new member becomes effective immediately.
