The World Economic Forum (WEF) has released the Global Gender Gap Report 2024, ranking 146 countries based on the Global Gender Gap Index (GGGI).
Key Highlights:
- Iceland, Finland, Norway, New Zealand, and Sweden top the list as the leading countries.
- The share of women in parliamentary positions has shown an almost uninterrupted positive trajectory since 2006, yet it will take an estimated 134 years to achieve full gender parity globally.
- Women currently comprise only 28.2% of the STEM workforce and 47.3% in non-STEM sectors.
- India ranks 129th globally (127th in 2023) and 5th in South Asia, trailing behind Bangladesh, Nepal, Sri Lanka, and Bhutan.
- In India, there has been a slight decline in Educational Attainment and Political Empowerment, but a slight improvement in Economic Participation and Opportunity.
- Despite high shares of women in primary, secondary, and tertiary education enrollments in India, these numbers have only been modestly increasing.
