The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) has recently extended the registration for Machine-to-Machine (M2M) and Wireless Personal Area Network(WPAN) or Wireless Local Area Network (WLAN) to all entities involved in these services.
About the recent move:
- This move aims to enhance the standard-based and secure M2M or IoT (Internet of Things) ecosystem while addressing the concerns of service providers in these domains.
- All relevant entities can register online through the SaralSanchar (Simplified Application For Registration and Licenses) portal, a portal that issues various types of Licenses and Registration certificates.
About M2M (Machine-to-Machine):
- The M2M refers to communication between machines or devices without human intervention.
- It involves the exchange of data between devices using various communication methods, such as wired or wireless networks.
- M2M communication plays a crucial role in the IoT, where devices are interconnected to share information and perform tasks.
- It is based on industrial instrumentation, enabling a sensor or meter to communicate the information it records (such as temperature, inventory level, etc.) to application software that can process and use it.
- It has been utilized in applications such as telemetry, automation, and SCADA (Supervisory control and data acquisition).
About WPAN (Wireless Personal Area Network):
- The WPAN is a type of personal wireless network that covers a relatively short range, typically within a person’s reach (within a few meters).
- Bluetooth and General Packet Radio Service (GPRS) are examples of WPAN technologies.
- These networks are commonly used for connecting devices like smartphones, tablets, and wearable devices.
- It is also known as a short wireless distance network.
- It allows an individual to connect all or most of his or her devices together and access the Internet or a local network using any of the native or supported wireless communication techniques.
- It uses a wireless communication medium instead of a wired connection.
About WLAN (Wireless Local Area Network):
- The WLAN is a type of Local Area Network (LAN) that uses wireless communication to connect devices within a limited area, such as a home, office, or campus.
- Wi-Fi technology is a popular example of WLAN.
- WLANs provide flexibility and mobility, allowing devices to connect to the network without the need for physical cables.
