WHO prequalifies TAK-003, a second dengue vaccine

The World Health Organization (WHO) has recently prequalified TAK-003, the second vaccine for dengue following the CYD-TDV vaccines.

About TAK-003:

  • TAK-003 is a live-attenuated vaccine that contains weakened versions of all four serotypes of the dengue virus.
  • It is approved for administration to children aged 6-16 years in areas with a high burden and transmission intensity of dengue.

About Dengue:

  • Dengue is a viral infection transmitted through the bite of infected Aedes aegypti mosquitoes, primarily, as well as Aedes albopictus, and is prevalent in tropical and subtropical climates.
  • Symptoms of dengue include high fever, headache, body aches, nausea, and rash, with severe cases potentially causing belly pain, vomiting, bleeding from the nose or gums, extreme fatigue, and even death.
