The Controller General of Patents, Designs, and Trademarks (CGPDTM) has recently granted the Geographical Indication (GI) tag to Kutch Ajrakh artisans of Gujarat.

About the Kutch Ajrakh:

  • It is a traditional textile craft practiced by artisans of Kutch, Gujarat.
  • This craft was introduced by Sind Muslims approximately 400 years ago.

Current Applications:

  • It is now commonly used for turbans, shawls, and bedsheets.

Distinctive Features:

  • Printing and Dyeing Techniques: It involves intricate resist printing, hand-block printing, and dyeing techniques on cotton fabric.
  • Complex Geometry: Artisans create constellations of designs using complex geometric patterns.
  • Natural Dyes: The fabric is dyed using natural vegetable and mineral colors.
  • Color Significance:
    • Blue: Represents the sky.
    • Red: Symbolizes the land and fire.
    • White: Depicts the stars.
