Pulicat Lake, located on the Bay of Bengal coast straddling Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu, ranks as India’s second largest brackish water lake after Lake Chilika in Odisha.

About Pulicat Lake:

  • Pulicat Lake is situated along the coast of the Bay of Bengal at the border of Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu.
  • The barrier island of Sriharikota separates the lagoon from the Bay of Bengal.
  • The lake is fed primarily by the river Kalangi and the river Arani.

Characteristics:

  • The lake is the second largest brackish water lake in India, after Lake Chilika in Odisha.
  • The lake is divided in the middle by the Sriharikota Link Road, which splits the water body into a lagoon and marshy land.
  • It is comprised of various regions: Pulicat Lake (Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu), Marshy/Wetland Land Region (AP), Venadu Reserve Forest (AP), and Pernadu Reserve Forest (AP).

Flora and Fauna:

  • Supports the largest congregation of Flamingos.
  • Part of the Pulicat Lake Bird Sanctuary, which encompasses a diverse ecosystem.

Ecological Importance:

  • Recognized as one of three important wetlands that attract northeast monsoon rain clouds during the October to December season.
